Dumb and Dumber
No...they were skinny...how about Tweedledee and Tweedledum.Yeah, that's better, they're fat like us.
This is the way my project works so far. While working on one aspect, you talk about the next part so you have a plan of action when the time comes. Well, the next part of the plan is the floor. You figure out where you're gonna put everything, What tools you're gonna need, blah, blah, blah. Since we're doing the laundry room while we're at it, one of the things we're gonna need to do is replace the patio door that goes out onto the deck. One, it opens in and causes a bottle neck right there because that's where the drier is and DeWitte hovers there like a mother bird hovers around it's nest. Two, it scrapes the floor. I went and bought the new floor already, it's really pretty and I can't have a stupid door ruining my brand new floor. Three, it's got water damage because the gutter used to leak and some of the wood needs to be replaced. And four, I've saved enough money in my budget to be able to afford it, no problem.
Well...this is where the stupid part comes in. Last night after dinner we decided to "look at it" and figure out what was involved. Neither one of has ever replaced an entire patio door, casing and all before, no harm in having a little look. Then, when I go online to do more research, I'll know what the heck they're talking about.
It's a big door. Like two regular doors side by side. Both sides are glass, the right side opens and the left is just to let in light, I guess. We started by removing the screen. Then we took off the outside molding, to see what was underneath. I leaned on the door while DeWitte removed the last piece of molding and that's when the whole thing fell out. Or, I should say fell in, right into the laundry room. Whoops! Whatever idiot that installed it in the first place didn't attach it to the house. The only thing that was keeping that thing from falling off in the first place were 9 finishing nails in the molding! I guess the demolition won't be as hard as we thought.
So, now we've got a problem. A BIG problem. I'm all for community trust but I really didn't feel comfortable going to sleep with my entire patio door hanging out or in. That's just asking for a burglar to come in and steal everything we own. I just got that new pottery and I'd like to keep it for a while and you know they'd steal that first thing. Because of the water damage, it skewed when it moved. We spent the rest of the night pushing and pulling, hammering and cursing until we finally got it back in and could close the door. So much for that "little look".
That's why we spent the afternoon shopping for a new patio door and why, this weekend, instead of finishing the current project, we'll be installing it. I guess I'd better get on that research!

I have to say...."I'm IMPRESSED with you two!" Ahhh, you are realllly ballsey. (Is there such a word or did I just make that up?) Usually when one is remodeling their home, ie. removing doors, cupboards, electric fixtures, etc, etc. etc. they have done it before or at least, have watched someone do it before. It sounds to me like you simply tear into it! No fear! "I'll just read about how someone else did it and take it from there." Amazing! When You finish all your *little* projects you can come north and start on my *Honey Do* list, since we are NOT able to do it ourselves. We have to wait until we save up to hire someone else to do it for us.
Materials.....$100.00........Labor to have it installed.......$101.00
Like I said......I'm REALLLY impressed with how gutsy you are.
Denise ;)
